What is Vins de Pays

To deserve the Vin de Pays designation, a wine must meet a certain number of criteria which may be summed up as follows:

  • The wine must come exclusively from the area of production whose name it bears.
  • It must meet precise standards under analysis.
  • It can only come from ‘recommended’ grape varieties, a list of which is drawn up in each department.
  • It must achieve a tasting accreditation. If the opinion of the Commission is positive, the wine is ‘accredited’ as Vin de Pays in the classification applied for. Only a wine which has been accredited can be marketed as  Vin de Pays.

Not any wine will become a Vin de Pays in France !
