Grape varieties

A grape variety is the type of vine. This gives wine its first characteristics. Each variety has its own personality and passes it on to the wine produced, providing it is matched with the most suitable soil .

Vins de Pays originate from recommended grape varieties, a list of these is drawn up in each region. They are usually characteristic indigenous varieties from the region itself.

Over the last ten years well-known varieties such as Chardonnay or Merlot, now famous throughout the world, have been introduced in the regions producing Vins de Pays wines.

In France, Vins de Pays wines with a label showing a grape variety, such as Chardonnay for example contain 100 % of that variety even though European Community legislation tolerates a percentage of 85 %.
